Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium

Our Talented Crew

Over the past 2 years you have been introduced to all of the different teams it takes to run this building — you have met them; have learned about their “day jobs” and their community involvements. There is one more remarkable thing about Jubilee employees. Hidden amongst them are some incredibly artistic people.

Working in the arts as administrators, front of house staff or building and facility managers does not demand more than an appreciation for the arts. There is no requirement for talent nor are there auditions. However, we count ourselves lucky, so many of our co-workers have amazing talent. This month, you will get a taste of what they can do.

Tova Designs by Mary Sytar Mary Sytar, our Administrative Assistant, designs jewelry. She makes gorgeous and amazing pieces using semi-precious stones and gems and hand-crafted silver.
Kelly Jerrott, Executive Director of the Friends of the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium Society plays the trombone. For a long time she played with a local band and they were invited to gigs all over town.
Painted Gourd Birdhouse by Brenda Deleeuw Brenda Deleeuw, Administrative Support, Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation, makes birdhouses from gourds and hand-paints them. They are amazing, and weatherproof!
Gregg Ingram, Head of Department, Lighting, is a new, and very good photographer. In fact, many months you have seen his work in this newsletter. He does marvelous and interesting work, and he is incredibly accommodating of unusual requests.

Our Head of Department, Audio, Roy Fraser, is an incredible woodworker and cabinet builder. If you have been given a backstage tour, you might have seen some of the furniture he has built for storage here in the building.

These are just the employees who agreed to be introduced. Secretly tucked away are an amazing cook, a writer, a seamstress and a couple of singers. Christmas parties are never dull!

So now, when you visit the Jubilee Auditorium, please think about the people you meet. The smile and "hello" may be coming from the next big thing to hit Edmonton’s art community.

Our Golden Jubilee

Golden Jubilee of Jubilee Auditoria

On April 28, the Jubilee Auditoria celebrated a golden anniversary. The Auditoria were commissioned in 1955 when the Province was celebrating its 50th birthday. Then Premier E.C. Manning declared of the buildings, "The need for such centers has long been apparent. The government believes that they will be both appropriate and practical memorials to the fifty years of development and to those pioneers whose foresight and fortitude made that progress possible."

Many of you will remember that in 2005 we re-opened after extensive renovations, coinciding with the Province’s centennial celebration. There was great fanfare — these buildings are steeped in Provincial history and so it seemed appropriate that we would be a part of the party. We took that opportunity to celebrate our history too, marking the occasion of our groundbreaking.

This year, we celebrate 50 years in operation; 50 years of open doors and Broadway shows and cultural concerts and graduations. We honour 50 years of being the facility which brings you the best shows and the finest evenings. This celebration is about what the Jubilee Auditorium means to you, for you. For this birthday celebration, we are collecting stories from YOU.

Follow this link to see what has been posted so far. Check back regularly. If you haven’t yet — add your own memories. And if you have — thanks so much. We are enjoying the gifts very much.

Three fun facts:

This summer, for the first time since our re-opening, we are hosting many fun productions, including a Broadway show! Did you miss Mamma Mia when it was in town two years ago? It’s back in July and we are THRILLED.

Bringin' it Back Home Tour

Singer songwriter Keb’ Mo’ has tapped into the original Delta blues sound. He has then added other musical notes of jazz, pop and folk to create his own post-modern distinctive sound. His latest CD Suitcase released last year features what Keb’ (born Kevin Moore) calls his most personal album to date with the expected acoustic and slide guitar along with his pure and unvarnished vocal style.

Live From Across the Pond, Robert Cray’s recent Grammy-nominated release, demonstrates the singer/guitar player/songwriter’s magic on stage. The Robert Cray Band has a road-seasoned history of more than a thousand dates played around the world and that has allowed them to lock in their elegant smooth sound and perfect their musicianship.

Jesus Christ SuperstarJESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, the groundbreaking theatrical masterpiece by legendary writing team Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, is coming to The Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in December. Tickets on sale now!

The first collaboration between Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be performed on the professional stage, Jesus Christ Superstar is one of the most popular and enduring works ever created for the musical theatre. Featuring such notable songs as Superstar, Everything’s All Right and I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Jesus Christ Superstar earned five TONY nominations.

Set in two acts, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the final seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Superstar dramatizes Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, the unrest caused by his preaching and popularity, his betrayal by Judas, the trial before Pontius Pilate, and his ultimate crucifixion. Perpetually changing the face of musical theatre, Jesus Christ Superstar will leave audiences captivated by its power.

As relevant and timeless as ever, Jesus Christ Superstar, the rock opera vision of “the greatest story ever told,” is perhaps more potent in today’s troubled world than when it was first produced.

Now, for the new millennium, this magnificent story comes once again vividly to the stage with Ted Neeley re-creating his unforgettable performance.
