Leave the Drama on the Stage

— with contributor Grant Tolley

We have all had experiences like this one, shared with us by Grant Tolley:

"I am enjoying a tremendous amateur musical and dance production. Enter — late — child X, six years old, with his mother, whose purse, dangling from her arm, hits each of us in my row in the head as she moves down her row in order to get to her two seats which are, of course, immediately behind me. Mom orders X, out loud, to “sit there and shut up and watch the show and don’t bother these nice people who came here to see your cousin.” Really.

"Whoever planned the recent renovations at the Jube must have measured the length of X’s little legs, for they fit the distance between his seat and mine perfectly. It took X approximately 15 seconds to start pushing and kicking the back of my seat. I muster up my most disdainful glare, complete with wrinkled brow and scowl, and turn to intimidate little X into ceasing and desisting. But it’s dark in the auditorium! He can’t see my face! So, I quickly mutter “please stop kicking my chair,” and turn around to try to enjoy the show.

"He didn’t. Apparently some people can’t hear in the dark either. Anger wells up within me, and I finally turn to Mom and ask, “Could you please have your son stop kicking my seat back.”

"Mom looks at me like I have two heads, and then ignores both of them. She says nothing. She does nothing, except tries to peer around me, as though I were a pillar blocking the view in front of her seat, to continue watching the show. Whereupon the woman seated right next to me turns to me and says, “Sssshhh! We’re trying to watch the show.”

"I’ve been shusssshed."

It can be extremely frustrating, when you are trying to enjoy a show, to have to navigate other people’s impolite behaviour.
To that end, this month we are publishing a list of recommendations for theatre etiquette. On your next visit to the Jubilee Auditorium, please keep these suggestions in mind.

  • Respect your neighbours and fellow audience members. Talking, inappropriate laughing or other outbursts interfere with the rest of the audience — and the performers. Even fidgeting can be disruptive to seat neighbours. Please keep these distractions to a strict minimum.
  • CELL PHONES/PAGERS/BLACKBERRIES are never appropriate in the theatre. Turn off all electronic devices before taking your seats.
  • Please take advantage of our Coat Check services. Coats, especially large winter coats, take up a good deal of space in our auditorium — where space is often at a premium.
  • Make sure that you have plenty of time to arrive, park, check your coats, use washrooms and get water before the show begins. Rushing through the crowded lobby is a terrible way to begin a nice event.
  • Heavy perfumes and other products with strong smells are discouraged — they can be problematic to anyone who has allergies or respiratory concerns in our theatre. Please be considerate when getting ready for your theatre outing.
  • It is a good idea to read your program pre-show. This will give you a sense of what to expect for the performance. It will help you identify any scheduled interruptions during the program.
  • Please leave hats, gum, and individually wrapped candies at home. All of these items are disruptive — hats impact the sightlines of anyone sitting behind you, and gum and individually wrapped candies make a good deal of noise being opened and eaten or chewed.
  • Most shows forbid taking photos, video or audio recording during the show. Please refrain from taking notes during a production too. These policies are set by the performers and their production managers, and help protect the performers’ copyright ownership.
  • Assess honestly any illness you may have. If your cough or nose-blowing will be disruptive to your neighbours, seriously consider giving your ticket to a deserving neighbour or friend who is in good health.
  • Make a point of thanking persons in neighbouring seats for the good behaviour of their children and youth; positive reinforcement brings their behaviour to the front. Eventually, they may be role models for others and for the next generation.
  • Be responsive to the show. The audience is an important part of live theatre. Performers expect some amount of interacting with the audience. Please feel free to laugh when it is appropriate, clap when it’s appropriate, in general respond to what the performers are giving you.
Remember, respecting these guidelines makes everyone’s experience more pleasant. Attending an event at the Jubilee Auditorium is a special occasion; it calls for best behaviour from all of us!

Washington Square Serenade, Steve Earle’s new album, is a tribute to Greenwich Village and the folk revival movement of the 1960s. The album is very much a Steve Earle album; full of the fiery political lyrics, country-rock influences, and stellar songwriting that have informed previous releases.

Steve Earle is recognized by many as one of the greatest songwriters of his era, as well as for his ability to cross over with country, rock and folk audiences.

Don’t miss Steve Earle with special guest Alison Moorer at Northern Jubilee Auditorium on Wednesday, March 12, 2008.
