The original Canadian Idol is touring to celebrate a remarkable 50 years in the entertainment business. He has sold over 40 million albums, CD's and singles worldwide. He has appeared in several films including The Longest Day for which he wrote the theme and received an Oscar nomination.
Paul is releasing a new CD later this summer to commemorate the occasion; My Way - Swings & Strings which he says is one of his most personal albums to date. It features Anka's favourite songs including some of his own greatest hits and some of his favourite singer-songwriters and a few notable duets all done in the big band vein which is enjoying a major resurgence.
Anka became an international teen idol at the youthful age of 16 with his first hit Diana, however teen idols aren't usually around to celebrate 50th Anniversaries in the business. Paul's talent especially for writing made the difference. As Don Costa of ABC-Paramount Records said in 1975, "He just couldn't write a bad song". A string of hits ensued and soon Paul was writing for other artists often producing what would go on to become signature tunes such as She's a Lady for Tom Jones and the unforgettable My Way for Frank Sinatra. He also wrote the theme for Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. For decade after decade the hits just kept on coming; from Diana to Lonely Boy to She's a Lady to Do I Love you.
Paul was a leader in taking control of his own career and, in a previously unheard of move, when he left ABC-Paramount he purchased his masters and publishing rights and set up his own Camy Productions.
This Canadian music icon has been presented with the Order of Canada, a star on Canada's Walk of Fame and now a Canadian stamp is being released in his honor…what more can we say?
