GISELLE September 18 - 19, 2007 in Edmonton

Performances at 8:00 pm

This haunting tale of love, betrayal and forgiveness captures the sensibility of Romanticism. Giselle is the story of a young peasant girl who is overcome with grief and madness by her lover’s deception and, upon her death, is transported into the ghostly world of the Wilis, the spirits of betrayed young women.

The role of Giselle has been called “the ballerina’s Hamlet” and is one of ballet’s most demanding both technically and dramatically. The dancer must convey Giselle’s transformation from lighthearted peasant girl to madwoman and, finally, to a ghostly vision. Equally, the role of Albrecht provides male dancers with one of ballet’s most complex characters. A nobleman in disguise, perhaps Albrecht wishes to be freed from his elevated social position or maybe he is a restless dreamer who seeks a quaint diversion among the peasants. Each dancer brings his own interpretation to the role.

"When Giselle’s underlying themes of love, betrayal, forgiveness and redemption are told through the poetry of dance, they take on a power that is almost epic in its ability to stir the emotions...a show to remember"
