Hailing from the American mountain country of North Carolina, Steep Canyon Rangers bring their unique interpretation of traditional bluegrass music to Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on Friday, June 22, 2018. Formed in 2000 while attending University of North Carolina, this GRAMMY and International Bluegrass Music award winning sextet transcends string-based music traditions by blending pop, folk, country and rock to re-interpret the time- honored bluegrass aesthetic.

Throughout 2009, comedian, actor and distinguished banjoist, Steve Martin enlisted the band to join him for his "bluegrass world tour." This musical bond quickly grew to include critically acclaimed collaborative recordings, Rare Bird Alert (2010) and The Long Awaited Album (2017).

With the 2018 release of their 10th studio album, OUT IN THE OPEN, Steep Canyon Rangers continue to preserve the musical tradition of a genre which prizes musicianship above all else, while simultaneously pushing against the boundaries of a familiar musical template. Recorded with all six band members in one room and without overdubs the sound transcends established bluegrass mandates and yet stays true to its purest form.

Although adventurous players unafraid to intertwine several musical genres, Steep Canyon Rangers remain bluegrass "lifers." Masters of prolific story-telling each narrative is underscored by the player's collective musical precision. Steep Canyon Rangers' live performances showcase limitless artistic expression delivered with the bravado of those familiar with the well-traveled path, but unafraid to explore uncharted territory. As they approach their second decade, Steep Canyon Rangers remain loyal to the original music that links them to the past while continuing to broaden the genre to appeal to younger and younger audiences.

Opening act, Birds of Chicago, fronted by acclaimed singer/songwriters JT Nero and Allison Russell perform songs offering healing, communion and a celebration of life in a dark and troubled time. This husband and wife led band draws heavily on the gospel tradition and the music feels like a new, secular gospel of sorts. Music described as raw, soul-rich and to quote roots music publication, No Depression, "near perfect Americana," demands to be experienced live.
